… is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt
- Bertrand Russel
I normally don’t do “go look at this other blog post” articles, but I couldn’t resist with this:
The Dunning Kruger Effect (Critical QQ via Pwnwear)
This does explain a great deal of what we see in dungeon finder groups, and covers succinctly my feelings from the post on Selfishness.

Good that this is brought to the attention of your readers, who I’d suspect are almost by definition in the aware, analaytical, competent bracket.
In-game it’s helpful to understand this, not least to use as a bit of a shield against shouldering all the blame. I often find myself taking the blame for a wipe because I know exactly which GCDs I used sub-optimally and how I could have changed the course of the encounter if only I’d not made that small error in judgement.
I know objectively that other people make mistakes too, because I spend a lot of time poring over WoL live parses and death logs while we learn content, but in the heat of the moment when you’re fully aware of your own mistakes it’s difficult to stand up for yourself when faced with a chorus of “what killed me?” from the less-aware.
I’ve written about this before in my personal life as well; as a doctoral candidate this is something I keep running up against when I’m beginning to realise how little I really know about my chosen field. It’s easy to be overwhelmed by what you don’t know or what you get wrong, while forgetting all the things you do know and have achieved.
